Description: Item #3049 This set of 2 pairs (4 pieces) of cut and polished ammonites is from about 146 to 66 million years ago (Cretatious Period), and is from Madagascar. Ammonites are a squid-like animal with tentacles to snatch prey. They could be tiny in size or 3 feet in diameter depending on the age and species. As the animal grew in size, it would add chambers to accommodate its larger size. This is a fossilized ammonite. These ammonites are polished on the front only, but the outside shows the original shell. While the outside shell is not polished, these ammonites were selected because they all have IRIDESCENCE in their outer shell. Iridescence is very hard to capture on camera, as it changes color as the ammonite is moved. You get the same effect when you see a parking lot after a rain, and you see the colors in the puddles. All of the ammonites have very good contrast between the chambers, made of light and dark calcite. This ammonite pairs are perfect with all chambers filled with calcite. The outside shell may not be perfect as it was left natural(see photos). 2 ammonites have hollow chambers in which you can see tiny calcite crystals with a hand lens. These are all a little larger than a quarter. These are nice specimens just as they are, but many people use them for jewelry, as they are the perfect size for that. These ammonites are 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 inches wide. The set of 4 weighs .8 ounces (24 grams). NOTE: This set has very good iridescence. ALSO NOTE: this set is very light and you could add another light item and pay little or no shipping. I refund all extra shipping in the package.
