They expanded and acquired other potteries as a result of their success in the early 19th century. Rose and his firm garnered acclaim for their technical improvements in manufacturing and leadless glazing. The company further enhanced its reputation at the Great Exhibition of London in 1851. There Coalport displayed an elaborate table service commissioned by Queen Victoria as a gift to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. Despite this, the company sometimes struggled with its finances, going into receivership in 1875. The company reopened under the name “Coalport China Company” and eventually greatly developed its export trade in the 1890’s.
