Santa Fe Railway in Nebraska, 1970-1996

Description: New 9/24. At less than 3,000 people, Superior, NE, near the Kansas border, hosted action from the C&NW, MoPac, CB&Q, and Santa Fe. While no shops existed, two depots served all of the lines. The Santa Fe acquired a former C&NW branch line through town which was upgraded to 100-car freights. The unique feature of the area was the use of many older F-units in Santa Fe freight service. Painted in many garbs, these F-units gave way to Geeps and U-boats, providing some unusual motive power lash-ups. Author Richard Kistler, with assistance from Richard Schmeling and Mike Bartels, compiled a wide array of color images of those F-units (A and B-units), Geeps, U-boats, and more in service in and around Superior.
