Held from July 27 - 30, 1978... the event was won by PGA golf legend Rod Funseth (1933 - 1985). Notably, Funseth fired a final round of 64 to win with 264; four strokes over Dale Douglass, * Lee Elder and Bill Kratzert. Funseth's best finish at a major championship occurred only weeks earlier when he finished in second place just behind winner Gary Player in Player's spectacular "come-from-behind" win at the 1978 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
