Description: Soviet Russian RM-2 Marine Respirator size 1 dated 1989 between January and March in Saratov Russia, lot 2. The NVI-5 Respirator, also known as the RM-2 when in a kit, is a Russian Nuclear Submarine half face respirator created in the early 1980s by Tambovmash as a means to protect Submarine crews who work on Atomic Submarines which emit an isotope called iodine-131, which is unable to be absorbed by any regular gas mask filter, thus the need for a special filter that I unfortunately do not have for this Respirator. The NVI-5 Respirator was developed as a basically production line model of the previous 1970s and 1980s Prototype RM-1 Isotope Respirator that is basically the RM-2, but with an earlier green rubber "facepiece". The RM-2 Respirator is still used to this day by the Russian Navy and Marines, though the model used now utilizes a much higher quality rubber and black plastic hardware. The goggles in this masks kit are Soviet ZN8-72, not great but not the worst. They are a very weird design that makes you think, "What tf were they thinking?" when wearing them.
