Description: Grow your own delicious and nutritious sorghum with these high-quality seeds from Womack Farm. This annual vegetable is known for its upright leafy flowering and beautiful orange and green colors, making it a great addition to any garden. Sorghum, an ancient grain, is thought to have originated in northeastern Africa around 8,000 BC. The earliest evidence of wild sorghum use as food comes from hunter-gatherers in the Sahara around 7500 BC. Archaeological evidence suggests that domesticated sorghum may have been developed in eastern Sudan around 3000 BC. Sorghum's ability to grow well in arid climates likely contributed to its spread across Africa, where it adapted to a variety of environments. From there, it spread to India, China, and eventually Australia ROX ORANGE SORGHUM aka Waconia Cane Sugar. This a super sweet strain of sorghum used to make sweet syrup and sugar. Developed by the University of Wisconsin for syrup production. A few decades ago, there where thousands of acres planted with Rox Orange for syrup/sugar production, but due to the labor-intensive process it was phased out in favor of sugar beets and sugar cane. Grow Rox like you would grow corn. A lot of sun, a lot of water and a little fertilizer. It will grow to 8ft tall and takes about 100 Days to harvest. Though technically a variety of grass, Rox Orange Syrup sorghum grows a dramatic and feathery field grain bursting with dense broom-like kernels of classic pale white, alpine, and pearl. Known by a variety of names and cultivated for multiple uses, sorghum has been the worlds fifth most exported grain crop behind rice, wheat, corn, and barley. Rox Orange Syrup Cane sorghum is a full sun crop performing best when sown directly outdoors after the final frost date and should rarely, if ever, be transplanted. Plant 2-3 seeds 1 inch deep and 3-4 inches apart in Organically rich, well-drained soil in full sun. Germinates in 10-21 days, thinning back to one plant every 12 inch as true leaves establish. The plant is a grass growing similarly to corn.
