Description: Robert Mapplethorpe The Perfect Moment Program & Tickets The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, 1990 Boston was the final destination of a seven-city tour of The Perfect Moment, a retrospective of Mapplethorpe’s work. The exhibition aroused bitter controversy and a major political row in Washington. In the balance hung artistic freedom and even the very existence of the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition came to The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston in 1990. The museum was charged with obscenity. Free speech proponents demonstrated in front of the museum. City councilman Albert “Dapper” O’Neil visited the museum to judge for himself, and thought the photographs were so obscene that he threatened City Council action. Eventually the obscenity charges were dropped, with the Massachusetts State government, ruling in favor of the ICA.Two Ticket Stubs - UsedNot Professionally Graded
