Kennedy decided to run for the presidency in part to honor his brother's legacy, and in part over his disagreements with President Lyndon B. Johnson's policies and involvement in the Vietnam War, at one point asking an advisor, "How can we possibly survive five more years of Lyndon Johnson?" Kennedy's campaign was announced on March 16, 1968, and had been gaining steam up until his assassination.
