Description: MAJOR ARCHIBALD WILLINGHAM BUTT WAS AN ARMY OFFICER, WHO SERVED AS MILITARY AIDE TO PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT AND THEN TO PRESIDENT WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT. Both President's loved Archie like a son. After a European tour and a meeting with the Pope in Rome, Major Butt was returning to America. He boarded the RMS Titanic on April 10, 1912 at Southampton. He was carrying a letter from the Pope to President Taft in his pocket. On the night of April 14, 1912, Major Butt attended a private dinner party, given to honor Captain EJ Smith's 40 years at sea. The party was a formal dress affair, in the A'la Carte restaurant, given by the Widener family. Archibald Butt was dressed in his formal military uniform. At the conclusion of the party, Major Butt, Clinch Smith, Archibald Gracie, and other men reired to the First Class lounge for cigars and cards. After the collision with the berg, Major Butt halped get women into the lifeboats. He was last seen on deck, standing off by himself, in quiet thought, resigned to meet his fate. His body was never found. One surviving witness, Renee Harris, quoted Major Butt as saying to one gentleman who tried to bull his way into a boat, "Women will be attended to First or I'll break every bone in your body!"
