They vary from highly political and satirical to simply absurd and intentionally obscene. One such comic that falls somewhere into the divide of those two extremes is Cocaine Comix, originally published in 1975 by Last Gasp Eco-Funnies Inc. out of Berkeley, California. Cocaine Comix #1 is broken into three stories covering the adventures of the main character Wildroot through his experiences in the unsavory scene of 1970’s Hollywood. Through all of the stories, the main focus is on Wildroot’s pension for, and pursuit of, cocaine. The four main artists that contributed to the production of Cocaine Comix #1, Rich Chidlaw, George Dicaprio, William Stout and Brent Boates, all continued on to have art and comic-based careers. Both Chidlaw and Boates boast long Hollywood careers producing story boards and movie posters. Chidlaw has produced story boards for television shows such as Duck Tales and Winnie the Pooh. He also continues to produce underground comics. Boates has produced movie posters for major motion pictures including Men in Black. The A-Team. William Stout and George Dicaprio have continued careers in the underground comics community. Dicaprio, who is also the father of actor Leonardo Dicaprio, is an underground comics producer and distributor in the Los Angeles area. Stout worked with Harvey Kurtzman to create the Playboy series “Little Annie Fanny” and continues to produce artwork for comics and movies.Again, look at pics provided.
