Description: 19th CENTURY HELIOGRAVURE RE-WORK BY CHARLES AMAND-DURAND (1831-1905) OF REMBRANDT'S 1632 ETCHING "THE RAT-CATCHER" (Bartsch 121) The ninetenth-century Durand re-works of Rembrandt etchings using the process of heliogravure is well documented. A number of Durand's plates were obtained by the leading art historian Philip Hamerton and re-issued in his prestigious publication "The Portfolio" in the 1880s. This is printed from one of them. CONDITION: Pristine condition, excellent. Well printed on thick "laid" paper. Margins intact, the platemark line of the heliogravure printing process is clearly visible. A nice sharp, evenly-inked impression. Rare to find one in such fine condition, came from a very well preserved copy of "The Portfolio". NOTE: Traces, but only traces, of the signature and date are in bottom right corner, but they are very feint and you will need a magnifying glass to see them. Size of main image is 5.5 x 5 inches. Total size of sheet is 10 x 7 inches. Charles Amand Durand developed the process of heliogravure in the 1860s. This was much admired by Georges Duplessis (1834-1899), Curator of the Prints Department of the National Library in Paris. The two men decided to collaborate on a lengthy project to re-create some of the Old Master prints in the French collection, particularly the etchings of Rembrandt; Duplessis provided the originals, early states, and Durand used them to meticulously recreate them by heliogravure. The results were published in two volumes with the imprint of the Hachard publishers, under the auspices (and with the total involvement) of the French National Library. The works proved so popular that subsequent editions were printed in France in the period 1860-1880. Durand's work came to the attention of the leading Rembrandt scholar of the day, Philip Gilbert Hamerton, who acquired the rights to publish a number of the Durand heliogravure plates in his own publications. These may have been printed in France. They were printed on laid paper, and inserted into Hamerton's own works on Rembrandt such as "The Portfolio" journal, a compendium/showcase for some of the most important etched works of all time, by such masters as Durer, and, of course, Rembrandt.
