Description: This drawing is dated 1987 in the bottom row of his calendar section BUT oddly enough, notice that in the upper part of his drawing he uses the dates 1947-2007! why is 2007 odd? Because he died of a heart attack on July 5th, 1997. Here Royal is using a kind of future prophecy for his daily anguish and suffering. This is on poster board and measures 22" x 28" It is a double single sided drawing. BUT notice that Royal has folded the drawing to create a kind of 2 sided/ 3 images drawing. My best take on this drawing is that Royal often later redid or took up certain DRAWINGS THAT HE HAD DONE EARLIER BUT THEY HAD A BLANK REVERSED SIDE AND SO HE REWORKED THAT PORTION. The 'front' which is folded shows a calendar with references to Biblical elements and Apocalyptical warnings. On the right side we find a bathing beauty descending a staircase within an implied exotic space. This part is full of prophesies of horrible things to come from a vengeful God is out to punish the evil doers. The verso side, in my years of experience as a folk art/outside scholar, is a much earlier drawing which has almost an atmospheric watery quality. It also has the "TV" black glittered screen effect. Notice the delightful pen drawing in the bottom right corner that depicts a sailing ship with mountains in the background. An image within an image, both are fables of "getting away" by living in a castle or adventure on the seas. The drawing media is permanent SHARPIE pens, ball point pens, and colored permanent magic marker. Very stable. I have collected drawings from Royal since the mid 1980s and all, including drawings from the 70s, The are very stable and the color is vivid to good. DO NOTICE THAT ROYAL NAILED MOST OF HIS DRAWING ON THE WALLS OF HIS HOME USING 6 PENNY NAILS! So often you see multiple holes in the drawing corners. His works are in numerous private and public collections including the SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART, the Mississippi Museum of Art, The American visionary Art Museum and the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, among others. Prophet Royal Robertson (1931-1997) was a sugar cane mill worker and later became a sign painter. He and his wife Adell raised 11 children but when Adell left Royal and took the kids with her, He became unstable and had apocalyptic vision/dreams. He began to draw and eventually covered every inch of his Baldwin, Louisiana home and yard. paintings and drawings.
