Description: Historic Scottish sterling silver mounted ram's horn table snuff mull with all four of its original accoutrements still in-situ on long silver chains. The four items are a lucky rabbit's foot, a snuff spoon, a snuff pusher & a snuff tamper in the form of an ebonised wooden gavel. The snuff mull will be one of the earliest items of memorabilia relating to the Toronto Curling Club, Ontario, Canada as it was personally presented to the club in 1840, just 4 years after the club was founded in 1836. The engraved presentation inscription around the rim of the mull reads: "Presented to the Curling Club of Toronto U.C. by Wm. Ross 1840" The hinged lid of the mull has a large coloured agate stone inset and the horn tip bears a sterling silver collar ending in a thistle-shaped finial in which is inset a purple semi-precious stone. The mull sits on three silver-mounted hand-made round wooden castors which allow it to be moved smoothly over a table from user to user. Weight: 1.446 kg. Height: 190 mm. Width: 310 mm. Depth: 240 mm. Hall Marks (to lid mount, tip collar, snuff spoon & pusher): Glasgow 1837. Maker's Mark: Peter Aitken I. (Note: all hallmarks are similar so all items original to the piece). Toronto Curling Club: The club was founded in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1836 and is one of Canada's oldest curling clubs. Today it is called the Toronto Cricket, Skating & Curling Club having merged with the cricket club (founded 1827) and the skating club (founded 1895) in 1956/57. The club thrives to this day. Summary: This is not a rare item, it is a unique & historic item! It is one of the earliest artefacts relating to Toronto Curling Club and is of museum-quality. Good luck! NOTE: Due to the size & weight of the package I will post using ParcelForce 48. I am happy to post worldwide (including to Canada of course) but I can only do so using the Global Shipping Programme & I cannot post personally.
