Description: I've had this for a few years. Taken it out sparingly to marvel at how cool and how wack the design is & question whether I'll find the right vehicle to build it up and use it, but hasn't happened and maybe it's time to pass on to the next dreamer (custodian). The closest thing I've seen to it is the old and brilliant Cinelli Bivalent hub system (see last pic) which allows for the freewheel/cassette to stay on the frame and the hub centre/wheel drops out. Possibly even rarer is this Sachs Huret version of the same principle, which looks like it was made in the 1980's going by the cogs and spacing - 6 speeds, 13-24 and spaced for 126mm frames. So hard to find much info about them but am guessing they were built and suited for touring and early MTB style frames. I don't dare remove the spoke protector (although most would) as it's original. The non drive skewer end is solid like a through axle skewer and threads into the back of the cassette hub body. The driveside locking nut and cassette bolts together separately, which is why it can stay with the frame. As you can see 4 pawls and what looks like high grade sealed SKF bearings. High flange hub, 36 holes. Never built. Super nice looking hub centre, with Galaxie stamped into the barrel centre. The idea being ... if you flat, or need to replace a spoke the wheel centre drops out without removing the chain, repositioning the derailleur or similar. Cool idea, has it's merits. But it's also heavy .. solid axle, lots of parts, intricate design. Hence better suited for touring and MTB stuff where overbuilt is a good principle. 2nd last pic is one I found of this hub system on flickr, only other one I've seen. Posted to show it without the spoke protector. There are some Galaxie rear cassette hubs, but none are like this one. As much as I love it ... I'm never gonna use it, and time to let someone else marvel and this truly rare item !! Unobtanium !!!!! And New, never used or built .. Check my other items !!!
