Description: MARILYN MONROE AGE 20 PORTRAIT PHOTOPhotographed and Hand Produced by Joseph Jasgur (Personal File Copy)Shot in 1946 at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles (Printed Later)Photo Originates from the Estate of Joseph JasgurPhoto Presented at Page 91 of Jasgur Book "The Birth of Marilyn" by Jeanne SakolSINGLE WEIGHT; PHOTO: 7 1/2" x 9 1/8" VERY GOOD CONDITION ESTIMATED PRINT DATE: PRINTED LATER Spectacular rare early swimsuit pin-up shot of a twenty year old Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean Dougherty at the time) photographed and hand produced by famed early Monroe photographer Joseph Jasgur! Shot in 1946 at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, this is one of the earliest known modeling shots of the iconic star... Monroe appears youthful, novice even, in a white bikini leaning against a Blue Book Models life preserver, the first modeling agency to sign her. Her charismatic presence and latent sexuality is undeniable though, even at this nascent stage. An amazing historic capture... this photo, and others Jasgur took during this period, were presented by Monroe to 20th Century Fox casting director Ben Lyon at a fateful meeting in the summer of 1946 that eventually led to her signing with the studio and changing her name to Marilyn Monroe. This photo is also reproduced at page 91 of Jeannie Sakol's book, "The Birth of Marilyn: The Lost Photographs of Norma Jean By Joseph Jasgur".This photo was hand printed by Jasgur himself and served as one of his own personal file copies. These file copies were often used by media outlets (magazines, newspapers) for publication. This photo was "printed later". Based on an evaluation of the photographic paper, print defects, and limited presence of brighteners, we estimate the photo to have been printed between 1960 and 1979, though we are unable to confirm that assessment. Jasgur hand file notations at verso. This photo is guaranteed shot, hand developed, printed, and produced by photographer Joseph Jasgur himself. It originates from the Joe Jasgur estate. It is not a modern print. It is not computer generated. Please note that the Julien's Auction ticket shown above is for informational purposes only to document the photo's provenance. This sale is for the photograph only. Marilyn Monroe Jasgur File CopiesLos Angeles based photographer Joseph Jasgur was only 26 years old when an unknown teen-aged aspiring model named Norma Jean Daugherty first walked into his studio in 1946 for some glamour shots. Little did he know at the time that he was shooting over the course of three weeks, some of the earliest known modeling photographs of the soon-to-be Marilyn Monroe. Jasgur’s photos of the young fresh-faced Monroe are iconic, many of them working their way into the portfolio Monroe showed 20th Century Fox when they first signed her. While Jasgur spent the rest of his long career photographing Hollywood celebrities and notorious crime scenes, it is his Monroe photographs that he is most remembered for. Jasgur died in 2009, two days shy of his 90th birthday. The contents of his estate were soon disbursed through a series of noteworthy sales and we were very fortunate to have acquired some of the choice Monroe material from the Jasgur estate. The Marilyn Monroe photograph listed here is one of Jasgur’s personal file copies. Many such copies are mounted to gray or white backing board for filing and contain Jasgur’s assigned inventory number and signature. Some are also stamped with a copyright notice (he’d been advised to do so years after originally printing the photographs). Our Jasgur Monroe photograph listings are a rare opportunity to acquire historic images hand produced and maintained by the celebrated photographer himself. GRADING: We use comic book grading standards, as defined by Overstreet and Comic Guarantee Corp., for grading all of our paper collectibles. These strict standards are well-developed and widely accepted. The various grades we use are generally applied as follows: Near Mint - item is bright and clean, virtually defect-free and appears "like new"... image is sharp... any defects would be barely perceptible and only visible upon close inspection. Very Fine / Near Mint - at first glance appears near mint but upon close inspection very minor degradation or one or two very small defects become apparent. Very Fine - generally clean and bright and still high grade and desirable but may have a few small defects (e.g., minor corner crease, light bend, subtle image degradation, etc.). Fine - average grade... nice collectible item but defects are more noticable and apparent.. may have some soiling or image issues. Very Good - lower grade... wear and tear is readily apparent... item is still complete though. Good - low grade... heavy defects... could be a piece missing from a corner or a major tear. Fair or poor - the lowest grades... we generally only offer items in this condition if they are hard to find. ADMIN: Check our other listings for more terrific Hollywood photos.
