Description: Here we have a long example of rare and unusual fossil tooth in jaw section from the Carboniferous-aged sharkEdestus heinrichi. These rare teeth are recovered deep underground in the coal mines of Illinois with this one coming out of Randolph County. Most of these teeth are found broken or worn and this piece is no exception and has glue repairs in areas but is in nice condition despite that. Edestuswas a very unusual shark only known from fossils of teeth and jaw sections from the Carboniferous/Pennsylvanian age. They could likely reach 20 feet in length around the same size as a modern great white shark. Like its other relatives likeHelicoprion, it did not shed its teeth as they became worn. This caused the jaws to become elongated and resemble a monstrous pair of shears. Check all photos closely for size/condition.
