He would fill his own bottles from huge barrels of raw whiskey and he conducted a mail-order trade, both legal practices at the time. The business prospered and became the largest wholesale distributorship in the Washington-Baltimore area until 1920, when Prohibition began. He was known as a “confidant” to high officials in local and national circles in Washington, fund-raiser for causes ranging from cerebral palsy to the State of Israel, and an accomplished handball and baseball player. As a young man, Mr. Kronheim also counted boxing among his recreational activities and one of his frequent sparring partners was John J. Sirica, who later became the federal judge who presided over the Watergate trials. When Mr. Kronheim invited Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to lunch at his warehouse in the spring of 1982, even The New York Times took notice of the event.
