Description: Specimens from the Butte mining district aren't rare on the market, interesting and unusual specimens outside of the common sulfide chunks from Butte with exact mines attached are very rare! This fabulous specimen features a thick band of sooty acanthite coating partially oxidized galena, polybasite and silver. Much of the acanthite likely occurred from oxidation of the native silver. Not only that, there is also hundreds of tiny sprays of gypsum var. selenite crystals coating multiple areas of the acanthite! And to top that off, there is a bright blue unknown copper mineral! The host rock consists of interlocking quartz crystals stained with generous amounts of manganese oxides, definitely classic habit of Butte quartz. This piece came from one small specimen I found at the mine after hours or searching and found no other ones!!This specimen was almost certainly mined during the early days because specimens like this only occurred in the upper oxidized zone of this silver mine. This was a very lucky find since I spent half a day on the Norwich-Platus extensive dumps and only came up with a single specimen like it!! 6.3x5x3.5 cm
