Description: RARE CIVIL WAR CAST IRON WALL MIRROR EAGLE WITH FEDERAL SHIELD/PATENTED 1862This is a very unique rare painted Civil War period cast iron wall mirror with an American Eagle on top, Federal Shield on bottom, flag bunting on different spots of the item. See pictures. Has a beautiful decorative element upper left and right. It carries an 1862 patent date on the back. This is a rare form, and mirrors of this type were hung in the homes of those serving in the War. The empty oval below the eagle was often used to house a picture of an important military officer or even a photo of the family soldier in service to his country. Paint is possible original but not sure. Left like i found it. Patina on the decorative elements in upper left and right is fabulous. The back shows an ingenious configuration to secure the mirror. While I have not taken it apart, the mirror may have been replace but not sure. I can't say whether it is the original or a later replacement. Size is approx 19" tall and 11 1/2" wide. It weighs approx 5 pounds. Condition is as found and as shown. Please look at all photos to form your own opinion of quality and condition for is used as part of my description. In very good shape! Would Clean up nice but I left in original Condition for patina! Will be shipped with extra care! No breaks or cracks Heavy weight
