Reigning only 3 years and 8 months Caligulas' gold coinage is considerably rarer than most of the ' Twelve Caesars' with one having sold for $ 300,000 recently at auction. The original of this coin was minted at Colonia Copia Claudia Augusta Lugdunum, an important Roman city in Gaul, established on the current site of Lyon. The city was founded in 43 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus.
