Description: This is a rare vintage porcelain plate, made by Hutschenreuther in Bavaria Germany. The artwork at the center of the plate is called Ratto di Elena painted by Gavin Hamilton (1723-1798), a Scottish artist in Rome. Ratto di Elena is a depiction of the abduction of Helen of Troy by Paris. His most famous paintings are a collection of six paintings from Homer's Iliad, including the one depicted on this plate, Ratto di Elena. Three of the 6 paintings, including Ratto di Elena, are now at the Museo di Roma (the Museum of Rome, Italy). The backstamp with the lion and 1814 was used starting in 1969, and the word SYLVIA refers to the pattern of swirls and the design in the porcelain itself. I don’t know what the blue mark on the back is. The edges of the plate are painted in gold and there are a few places where the gold paint strayed onto the plate. There is a lovely design of pink roses, and blue and purple flowers scattered on the outside edge of the plate, and a similar design with pink roses is also in the decorative edge around the main design of the plate, the artwork Ratto di Elena. The plate itself is 10 inches in diameter, and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing. There is minimal wear to the artwork that I can only see holding the plate at an angle to the light. I can also see faint lines in the hair of the woman behind Helen of Troy, which is visible in the pictures. There are a couple of breaks in the gold and brown rope-like circular border around the artwork, that can be seen in the pictures. I can also see the center artwork is not centered well in the plate. But it is still an amazing display plate, depicting beautiful artwork! Please zoom in on the pictures and see the 360 degree view for a closer look. I pack with lots of bubble wrap for safe shipping.
