Excellent Antique Condition Bought at an Estate Sale. From A Smoke-Free Home. Someone at the auction tore loose the paper backing on the frames to reveal the incised "WHEELING" mark on the back of the tiles. Easily replaced, but I am leaving it up to the buyer. No Other Issues. Dimensions: Frame 7 3/4" Diameter 1" Thick Tile 6" Diameter Wheeling Pottery Operated from 1879 to 1910 The Wheeling Pottery Company was established in 1879. President George K. Wheat and Secretary W.A. Isett provided the banking interests. Vice-President Charles W. Franzheim was an experienced potter who came from a long line of potters in England. The General Manager, E.M. Pearson, was also a skilled Staffordshire potter. By 1903, the Wheeling Potteries Company was organized by combining the Wheeling, La Belle, Riverside, and Avon potteries. The Wheeling Potteries Company fell into receivership by 1910. It continued operating as the Wheeling Sanitary Manufacturing Company, manufacturing porcelain sanitary potteries. These transfer images have been used by several potteries in the early 20th century. One of these, Alfred Meakin, describes them as: French Costumes 18th Century Hardy folk from the Coast of Brittany The richly embroidered costumes are still worn on festive days and special occassions.
