Description: MAP 66 Antique Map Two Polar Hemispheres of the World 1769 M. A. Moithey RARE Moithey, M A “Le Globe Terrestre Vu en convexe par les deux Poles, l'Equateur servant d'horison” 1769 Special Features:Two Hemispheres – from the poles!Original hand colorSecond State: large island in Baffin BayTitle, date and cartographer printed on the map. Guest Editor: I, Harald Leuba, am listing this map on eBay with the permission of the eBay account holder, my wife of 56 years, Nancy Kingsbury, aka "Showjudge". She is worried about how to find homes for our "stuff" when I die -- > if I die before her. We have enjoyed living with this map in our collection, but as I age, (I am now 86), I feel that I ought to protect IT from becoming lost in some 2nd hand store and, more importantly, I need to protect Nancy from having to cope with how to harvest its reasonable value in a time of personal stress. [In other words: We are downsizing!]...... I bought this map from John Faupel, Antique Atlas, East Grinstead, UK some 20 years ago. It was his # 12 in catalog 106. I have misplaced John's catalog. However: (a) John titled it: Moithey, M A “Le Globe Terrestre Vu en convexe par les deux Poles, l'Equateur servant d'horison” 1769 (And the title, date and Cartographer are ON the map) And (b) If I put: Moithey, M A “Le Globe Terrestre Vu en convexe par les deux Poles, l'Equateur servant d'horison” 1769 Into Google:I get 7 hits, (c) The first and second are from Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps: “Maurille Antoine Moithey“Le globe Terrestre Vu en convexe par les deux Poles, L’Equateur servant d’horison…“Paris / 1769“15.5 x 9 inches [Image; the paper is 17.5 x 11.5 inches]“Hand coloredVG+ $975 “Rare double hemisphere world map, on Cassini's projection.Shows a massive Bay of the West and fascinating mythical Antarctic coastal regions, which includes the coastline of New Zealand. Australia is also incomplete.Buache's Mer GlacialeSeveral mid-eighteenth-century maps, initially those of renowned theoretical geographer Philippe Buache, show a hypothetical depiction of what is now called Antarctica. The landmass is split into two with a large Mer Glacialerunning through their middle. The smaller of the two is separated from Tierra del Fuego but extends north to land spotted by Bouvet de Lozier in 1739. Across the frozen sea is the larger of the two of Buache’s Antarctic lands. It extends east, running well south of Van Diemen’s Land, which had been skirted by Tasman in his voyage of 1642-3. Farther east in the Pacific the shore twists north to include New Zealand, which was also contacted by Tasman.Bouvet’s sighting of Cap de la Circoncision is near one of the entrances to the polar sea. The other opening into the inland sea, to the southwest of South America, was placed where the buccaneers Sharpe and Davis had reported icebergs in 1687. Buache believed that the icebergs must have derived from a floating ice sheet, as in the Arctic. This hypothesis led him to conclude that the southern continent was not a single landmass but two islands separated by a frozen inland sea, from which icebergs detached themselves to float northwards. The inland sea theory was based upon work Buache had developed over a number of years. His ideas were presented to the Académie des Sciences in 1744, published as Considérations géographiques sur les terres australes et antarctiques in 1761, and republished in English in The Gentleman's Magazine in 1763. In it, he hypothesized that the southern pole must contain a frozen sea, fed by mountain ranges and huge rivers in order to produce icebergs of the size reported by Bouvet, Halley, and others. The Antarctic inland sea was much discussed by geographers at the time and it was copied by several other mapmakers.…….. The third hit is from Old World Auctions, where this map sold for $300 (against an estimate of $400-500) six years ago. In the Northern Hemisphere there is a large Mer de l'Ouest with five small islands and Lac de Valasconearly connecting with Hudson Bay. A large island in the vicinity of Alaska is named Presqu'Isle du Nord Ouest, and Greenland is connected to Canada. In the Far East, Hokkaido is quite distorted with the mythical I. de la Compagnie to the east. In the Southern Hemisphere parts of New Zealand and Australia are mapped, although conjectural coastlines connect Australia to both Tasmania and New Guinea and New Zealand appears connected to Antarctica. This is the second state, with the addition of a large island in Baffin Bay. Drawn and engraved by Maurille Antoine Moithey, with lettering by Herault. Published in Etienne Andre Philippe de Pretot's Atlas Universel.References: McGuirk #139; Mickwitz & Miekkavaara #179-6; Tooley (Australia) p. 188, #1528.Condition: B+A crisp impression with attractive color and two small spots in the title cartouche. Margins trimmed close to image at left.…..My comment: Having verified the identity of the map we are seeking a home for, let us move on to Fair Market Value: Our Map’s Image is Fine; the paper has darkened slightly over the past 253 years, but the map is still clean, clear and unstained, and free or stray marks. The margins are as issued, except that there is a very small loss at the lower left corner and a small stain at the lower right corner. The map will show well if matted and framed!. [Image: 16.5 x 10.75 inches; the paper is 17.5 x 11.5 inches]Our Map lies flat. Our Map is colored We have cared for this map by holding it flat in an Archive Binder with Acid free Plastic sleeves. If you are interested enough in maps to be considering buying an Original, you know that the plates for antique maps were often reused/reprinted/recycled/revised and that there are many different (related) versions available today. You will also know that maps were not usually stand-alone images. They appeared in bibles, histories, and even (as here) in atlases! Published in Etienne Andre Philippe de Pretot's Atlas Universel. But there is another earlier “version” of this map! [Compare our map to the map Barry Lawrence Ruderman map for sale today: Photos #7 & #8 (BLR) to Photos # 1 to #5 (our map) vs Photo #6 (Old World Auctions). “This is the second state, with the addition of a large island in Baffin Bay. Drawn and engraved by Maurille Antoine Moithey, with lettering by Herault. Published in Etienne Andre Philippe de Pretot's Atlas Universel.” If you just want the “image” to frame and enjoy: buy a reprint. If you like the idea of a “genuine antique map”, think about your choices.Condition, Color, state.…Last month, Barry Ruderman came to our house to look at our maps with a view to his acquiring the whole collection. He was warmly professional and lived up to his reputation for expertise. He said that our maps had been well cared for and were in unusually good condition. I am listing this map at 10% less than the map BLR has in stock!. Buy it Now or make an offer. .....Please help us find a new home for this treasure. Thank you for looking. Harald & Nancy P.S. Inflation? NO! When I bought my first map, there was silver in our US coinage. When I was in college, I could buy a gallon of gas for a silver quarter and mail a letter home for 4ç. I can STILL buy a gallon gas for the value of that silver quarter, but postage is now 60ç. Antique maps have doubled in price in the last ten years. Are they a store of value? I think so, but whether they are or not, they can be a permanent source of pleasure. P.P.S We are using the proceeds of this sale, not to add “dollars” to our bank account, but to support local charities (to help neighbors who have lost income due to Covid)!I hope you are pleased with your purchase and have warm feelings about helping others.
