RARE Antique c1872-1911 CUP with Bedtime Verse Foley China by W&Co of England

Description: This a unique and rare antique bone china cup, made by The Foley China of Wileman & Co. in Longton England. I think this cup is a bedtime cup, with a child ready for bed dressed in a night cap and night dress, and a verse from “The Sugar-Plum Tree” by Eugene Field on the cup. Can’t you just imagine, more than a century ago, a bedtime routine to get a small child to go sleep easily (hopefully), involving this bedtime cup for that “last” sip of water? Some things, like routines and efforts to put children to bed easily, never change! And just imagine this cup was part of that bedtime routine! The backstamp was the standard mark with an intertwined W and C with crown above, used by Wileman & Company from 1872-1911 according to thepotteries.org. This company operated in the pottery called the Foley Pottery, so they called their china Foley China. (This is the same pottery that later made EB Foley China but they are different companies). So this cup is somewhere between 113-152 years old! It is so pretty, too with the purple flowers decorating the top edge of the cup, and the verse in a pretty font and gold trim. And it is in amazing antique shape, with no cracks or crazing. There is rub wear to the gold trim, and a tiny chip on the bottom edge of the cup under the last word of the poem, “Swing” that can be seen in the last two pictures. These are the words on the cup from the poem, “The Sugar Plum Tree” by Eugene Field, (1850-1895), born in St. Louis Missouri. He must have been quite famous, and the poem very popular, for an English china maker to put it on their cups! So a slice of history from the past, in this cup! “When you got to the tree, you would have a hard time To capture the fruit which I sing; The tree is so tall that no person could climb To the boughs where the sugar-plums swing!” The cup holds 1 cup and is 3 inches in diameter and stands 3 & 1/8 inches tall. The bone china is quite fine and it only weighs about 6 ounces. Please zoom in on the pictures and see the 360 degree view for a closer look.
