(1931-1985) Weigh approx.15 oz. Heigh approx. 13cm or 5inches base approx. 9x5.5cm or 2.5 x3.75 inchesI believe my Grandfather received this from Atlantic Federal Savings and Loan Association during his frequent travels to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the late 1950's or early 1960's. If anyone know exact manufacture date of this particular bank I would appreciate the information. No longer have the key. Small spot of corrosion on rear where it says "Insured" and some to base. Both would probably clean off fairly easily.Considerably more rare than the far more common automobile shaped Banthrico banks. “Banthrico started in 1931 and made over 900 different metal banks; most were sold to financial institutions. This vast variety of banks reflects Banthrico’s capacity to create designs and produce molds for custom orders of as few as 500 or 1000 units. Most Banthrico banks were made of “white metal” consisting of 95% zinc, 5% aluminum and traces of copper, brass and lead. The production of the banks required a highly skilled workforce including a sculptor, mold maker, engraver, chemist and metallurgist. The production was by hand. The caster poured the molten metal into each mold separately. Later, imperfections and burrs were removed with a belt sander and buffing wheel. Banks were then colored through an electroplating process and a clear lacquer was applied. All production of the approximately 75 employee company was in a Chicago manufacturing facility. Surviving banks are somewhat rare (particularly if named to a particular financial institution), because the need for what was in the bank often surfaced long after the key was lost.”
