Description: Rare 1928 Ohio Socialist Calendar: (Cor) Nela Milner Stean, Teacher, Reader, Entertainer. She has been variously called a Progressive and a Socialist but Nela Milner Stean (1870-1943) was a woman ahead of her time, unafraid to speak in public on less than popular causes. She was the daughter of Christopher and Eleanor Patterson Milner. A graduate of Kings College, Pittsburgh, Nela was a popular speaker. Newspapers carried announcements of her appearances in nearby towns in Ohio. Nevertheless she’s been ignored by Ohio histories and histories of her hometown, Dover, Ohio. Nela was a popular speaker across Northern Ohio in the1920s where the Progressives and Socialists remained popular. This is an unused 1928 calendar. It has a wonderful photo of Nela, She’s identified as a “Teacher, Reader, Entertainer.” The calendar has its original Socialist Red Ribbon. Calendar measures 10-3/4 in by 13-7/8 inches. Her black and white photo measures about 7 x 9. This is not an applied photo; it was printed on the stiff white heavy stock paper. There is a small water stain on the photo, although it does not detract from her appearance,There is also water damage in the lower left side and a fold in the lower right side (see photos). Nonetheless, this is a very rare piece of ephemera. Indeed, it is a wonder it ever survived. I bought this at an estate sale in Akron, Ohio, a stronghold for progressivism and labor unionism. A portion of the proceeds of this sale goes to the Akron-Canton Food Back, I think Nela would be pleased!
