RARE AND UNUSUAL AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT WITH LIST OF EXPENSES FOR THE JUNE 1767 PARLIAMENTARY SPECIAL ELECTION DINNER, IMPACTED BY THE PASSAGE OF THE TOWNSHEND ACTS A FEW DAYS BEFORE THAT SPARKED THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION The present document provides a wonderful association with The Townshend Acts passed by the British Parliament in early June 1767, which levied taxes on lead, paint, glass, paper, and tea on the American colonies. Colonists believed that if the British had the right to levy a tax on imports, then they had a right to refuse to do business with them. The seeds of this resistance came the famed phrase, “No taxation without representation,” and the provisions of the acts would ultimately lead to the American Revolution. The Townshend Acts likely had a great impact on the special elections in 1767.
