But do not be put off, for it is rich in treasures large and small. Not the least of these is the imposing classic portico, less old by just one hundred years than the original building, which dates from the seventeenth century. It has been the country seat of the Marquess of Hertford from the beginning, and has been continuously occupied by the same family ever since. The interior is certainly more memorable than the exterior, save perhaps for the portico. The chief show-piece is without question the superb medallion in the ceiling of the Great Hall. But there is also the very fine Library, which contains thousands of handsomely leather-bound and tooled volumes. The Marquess will tell you that it is his favourite room, and no wonder. There are also the Blue Drawing Room, the Red Saloon, and the Prince Regent's Bedchamber with its huge four-poster bed. In every room there are treasures on display: pictures, porcelain, silverware, glassware, furniture alike reveal the perseverance of successive generations of the family in accumulating objets d'art.
