As such he was awarded his DSO for his participation, together with George Berge and three other French members of the SAS, in a successful attack on the German airfield at Haraklion in Crete in June 1942. After Stirling's capture in early 1943 he was appointed to command the SBS Regiment in the Middle East, receiving his MC for his part in the Dodecanese Campaign in 1943, including the defence of Leros where he was captured and escaped.
