Description: Jonathan Winters was primarily known as a comedian, actor, and accomplished painter. His artwork often reflected his whimsical and imaginative style, much like his comedic persona. Winters explored various mediums, including watercolor and acrylics, and his paintings typically featured vibrant colors and playful themes. His paintings, often abstract scenes, landscapes, and imaginative characters, are a testament to his unique perspective on the world. Winters saw painting as a form of expression, much like his comedy. His art, exhibited in galleries, is celebrated for its spontaneity and humor, mirroring his personality. His paintings encapsulate the creativity and joy that defined much of his career, inspiring and uplifting those who view them. Winter's fame as a beloved comedian and actor elevates the value of his artwork. Collectors often pay a premium for pieces created by well-known figures. His limited output of paintings has made them highly sought after. His artwork's unique blend of humor and creativity is a significant draw, enhancing its desirability. The playful and witty elements he infuses into his paintings will captivate and fascinate art enthusiasts. As an important figure in American entertainment history, Jonathan Winters was more than just a comedian and actor. His historical value adds another layer of significance to his paintings, making them both art and a connection to a rich cultural past. In the 1980s, many of Mr. Winters's paintings sold for over $20,000. When asked why his paintings command such a high price, he responded, "Honestly, the painting is not very good, but the concept .. the idea is priceless." Winters painted two pieces titled 'A New Member.' The first, shown on page 51 of his book Hang-Ups, depicts six white Ku Klux Klan hats behind a fence, followed by a seventh black hat. He states, "I always thought the KKK was as frightening a movement as there has ever been in this country. And that's why I felt it might behoove them to have a black join-up. Maybe it would shake things up ..." The second, offered for sale here, is similar in that it depicts one black hat ahead of eight white hats behind a fence. What is unique, however, is the graffiti was written across the fence. This graffiti gives a unique insight into the mind of Jonathan Winters not offered by his other paintings and very much mirrored his personality. This is a reflection of his views on social and political issues, himself and of the 1980's. Acrylic painting on 18x24 inch canvas. Original framing outer dimensions 23 3/4 x 29 3/4.
