Description: Malicorne is located in the Sarthe region of France near Le Mans. In Malicorne there was an abundance of clay in the soil and wood in the forests to heat the kilns. As a result pottery was produced as early as the 15th century. Late in the 19th century Leon Pouplard took over the faiencerie with his wife Beatrix and began producing pottery very similar to the wares from Quimper. There were even some wares that were exactly the same as those from Quimper. They began using a mark "PB" but it differed slightly from the PB in Quimper as the P was backwards, just as you see on this piece rom 1891 - 1898. Beautiful rendering of a Breton family! 11" x 14"
