Description: Punch Set Bowl 10 Cups Schachtel Charlottenbrunn Silesia Hand Painted 1899-1918 Carl Schumann Arzberg Bavaria Demi Tasse Cup & Saucer 1960-1970 Petite Flowers A beautiful Hand Painted PUNCH Set W/10 PEDESTAL CUPS & One Very LARGE Footed BOWL, BOWL manufactured in Sophienau, Silesia, Germany by Joseph Schachtel Factory of Porcelain, Pedestal CUPS manufactured by O. & E. G. Royal Austria (Oscar & Edgar Gutherz), SMOOTH RIMMED with PURPLE & BLUE GRAPES, Circa 1899-1918 DESCRIPTION: This beautiful punch set consisting of a large, footed 14 3/8" punch bowl and 10 pedestal cups have the purple & blue grape clusters with a smooth rim highlighted with gold trim. Although these were produced by 2 porcelain factories, they were hand painted in a decorating studio by the same talented artist. Study the high resolution photos to see the artistic talent and their wonderful condition. The inside of the cups and the bowl is the white of the porcelain. CONDITION: While these pieces are classified as used, the set is in superb condition with 2 exceptions. One cup has a water tight hairline and is still functional. Another cup has a chip from the rim and a hairline radiating downward from that chip. This would make a good display piece with the chip turned to the back, but it is not functional. The other 8 cups & the punch bowl are fine. We can find no other chips, scratches, cracks, other hairlines, or repairs. The paint & the gold are in remarkably great condition showing literally no wear. See the photos which magnify the pieces. All display beautifully and certainly are eye-catching as a set. DIMENSIONS: The pedestal cups have a diameter of 3 15/16" at the top and a height of 2 15/16". The punch bowl has a diameter of 14 3/8" and stands 6 5/8" high. HISTORY/MARKS: (Punch Bowl) In 1857, Julius Schwarz founded the Sophienau (Zofiówka) factory & then sold it 2 years later to Joseph Schachtel with 40 workers employed. From this time period to 1912 the factory continuously grew adding facilities and employees. In 1912, it had at its disposal nine furnaces, a painting room, printing works and a modern aerography studio. Until WWI, the number of employees increased up to 400 with 60% of products exported. In 1916 the family property was transformed into a joint-stock company with the name change to Charlottenbrunn. In another 3 years there was a return to the previous name – the Joseph Schachtel Factory of Porcelain. In 1920 Eugen Schachtel, the owner of the company, died. Presently, the operating factory belongs to the Lapp Insulators group. The punch bowl was produced here with the 3 Fleur de lys in a triangle which the marks4ceramics website cites as mark #5 used 1896-1919. See photo #6. (10 Pedestal Cups) Maximilian Marx and Oscar Gutherz established a porcelain decorating factory along the Rohlau Creek in Altrohlau around 1884. Interestingly, the business was financed by Lazarus Straus ( of LS&S, Lazaras Straus & Sons, New York Importer) who was Oscar’s father-in-law. The firm initially decorated porcelain from other factories, but later produced their own porcelain. In 1898 Oscar’s brother, Edgar, purchased Marx’s share of the business. The business continued to expand and in 1918 became part of OEPIAG towards the end of WWI. The mark on the cups was in use from 1899-1918 and is mark #558 in Robert E. Rontgen’s Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain. See photo #12. SHIPPING: This set is sturdy and heavy. This is the only item we have ever prepacked prior to listing.
