Description: JAMES PHINNEY BAXTER III (1893-1975) was an American historian, educator and academic who won the Pulitzer Price for History for his book Scientists Against Time. He obtained Masters’ degrees from both Williams and Harvard University and his Ph.D. from Harvard. He served as the first mast of Adams House at Harvard and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. From 1937-1961, he was president of Williams College. He left Williams for a few years during World War II while he served as research coordinator of information and director of the Office of Strategic Services. Baxter was also a member of the board of trustees of the World Peace Foundation.
