HERDER ~ CIRCA 1870’s~80's The end bolsters are cast German silver in a unique Birds Head pattern; with a very unusual 3-dimensional Bullseye configuration for the blade pins. Overall, this large 4 bladed pocketknife has a length of 3 3/4” closed, and is heavy for its size at 2.8 ounces or 81 grams. This knife is handmade, i.e., hand forged, hand ground, hand tempered, hand fitted and hand polished by the Master Cutlers of the firm and made as a Salesman’s sample. The Master spear point blade is 2 7/8" long and is hot stamped, "CROSS KEYS" trademark, "F. HERDER a Sn" in a straight-line pattern, and "SOLINGEN" in a 3-line stamping (no Germany). The pen blade is 1 13/16" long, and is hot stamped, "CROSS KEYS" trademark, "F. HERDER a Sn", "SOLINGEN" in a 3 straight line stamping (no Germany), en suite. The small curved unmarked 1” blade is a Champagne foil removing blade with a saw cut edge grind from both sides and a sharp point. The old-style hand forged corkscrew with an outer groove is 1 15/16" long and held in place by a pin through a pair of curved Birdseye ends of a pair of cast German silver mid-bolsters. These bolsters are pinned through a hole that is drilled through the back of both backsprings. This corkscrew has a very strong spring that shares both back springs. The 3 liners are brass, with the middle liner being milled with small diagonal lines. The Select, Exhibition Quality Mother of Pearl scales have iridescence that is found on pearl before the oceans became polluted and is not diminished by typical surface scratches caused by typical pocket wear as this is a Salesman sample that was never used or carried. These 4 select Exhibition quality pearl scales are perfect, and each is secured by 2 tiny German silver pins. All the scales have small aberrations in the pearl that make each scale unique. These naturally occurring layering of the pearl are not flaws and are especially chosen to enhance the multi-color iridescence that is best viewed in direct sunlight. This knife came off a late 1800's knife board from a Factory Salesman collection, is in as new condition; and I have never seen this pattern by another Maker. The entire knife is Pristine Mint, including the 4 blades that have all of the orginal Factory high polish finish. Almost all Antique knives, even dead mint knives, usually have a minuscule spot or two. A naturally occurring aging or spidering spot is desirable as takes a century to form; and is proof of genuine age. However, the only spot or sign of aging I can find is some aging to a couple of the 8 pearl pins that is visible with a jeweler’s loupe, and flaking / handling to the red pattern number. The knife blades are tight as new, and the entire knife looks as though it was made yesterday. This is an exceptional Pristine Mint Mother of Pearl fancy late Victorian period pocketknife in the rare and desirable 2 blade / Champagne foil cutter / Corkscrew pattern that was intended for a Gentleman of Means wanting a fancy pocketknife, and also have a blade to remove the foil on Champagne bottles, and a corkscrew to open a Whiskey or bottle of Spirits. This knife has several exceptional features; Exhibition quality Mother of Pearl, Salesman sample inked blade, unsharpened, uncarried, and pristine mint condition; and is as good as it gets. This was an expensive and unique pattern when made for a discerning Gentleman, and is a Pristine Mint, Investment grade pocketknife today that will only increase in value. FRIEDR. HERDER ABR.
