Description: Princeton, WI CDV 5 people (siblings?) with a great background, by Herman E. Megow None of the 3 women here seem thrilled to be having their pictures made, but the gents seem amused by the prospect. At least 3 of the sitters look enough alike that they may be siblings, but it's really hard to assess the relationships here. Megow has posed them in front of a backdrop that I have seen in other early photos from his studio. Printed on reverse is:"Herman E. Megow,Portrait Artistand Photographer,Princeton, Wis." Herman E. Megow, born in Posen, Germany in 1852, came to Princeton, Wisconsin in 1873. He was a Justice of the Peace for about 50 years (from 1884), served on the school board, and served several terms as city clerk. He also ran a barber shop, at a couple of city locations, and sold a hair restoration product. He bought a cigar manufacturing business (and the building it was in) in 1881. About 1886, he sold his barber shop and purchased a local photo gallery. In 1898, he added a third story and skylight to his photography studio, as natural light was very important to early photography. Megow died in May 1938, at the age of 85. Fading to image. Yellowing to image. Light soiling to image and card. Edge wear to card. Card measures about 4.125 x 2.5 inches, photo is about 3.75 x 2.375 inches. My mother was a photographer who collected antique photos of all types for years. As I am settling her estate, I will be listing these photos as quickly as I am able. There are hundreds of photos to go through, and I am trying to match any information my mother may have left with individual photos. Unfortunately, Mom had dementia at the end of her life and wasn't able to tell me much about her collection. She had done a lot of research into photographers and individual pieces in her collection, and often, but not always, filed her research with the photo(s). I search for more information on the internet and in history books, but it's a slow process and it will take me a long time to complete the sorting and selling process. I am always happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases, so please check out my other listings. I will ship as soon as I receive payment.
