Description: Here is a late 18th century (or early 19th) primitive portrait on board of a gentleman in period formal dress with his left hand on a large book. The painting is apparently unsigned by the artist although it has not been taken out of the original frame for closer inspection. It has not been looked at by anyone but me and I'm no expert, but the third photo shows a rubbing done by a prior owner on the top back of the frame revealing the name De Lisle. My research leads me to believe the subject is likely one Frederick De Lisle (1772 - 1851) of Guernsey, the island in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy and British Crown Dependency. It is also possible the subject is Frederick's son, Frederick Janvrin De Lisle, who predeceased his father in 1850, or his only other son Richard Francis Valpy De Lisle (1818-1894). You will find on Worthpoint a portrait miniature painted in the year 1800 of the senior Frederick De Lisle bearing a striking resemblance to the somewhat younger subject of this painting. That portrait miniature is attributed to an artist named George Patton however there does not seem to be any published information on an artist of that name - might it be an early work of the well-known listed English portrait miniature artist William Patton Sr. (b. 1767 - d. 1855) whose works were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1791 to 1844? The senior Frederick De Lisle, a Guernseyman, married Elizabeth Jeanne Janvrin of La Haule, St. Breade, in Jersey (the adjacent Channel Island and British Crown Dependency). In 1812 she had inherited the La Haule family home - known as "Le Coin" - which had been built in 1762 by her grandfather, the wealthy shipowner Brelade Janvrin. Frederick and Elizabeth, however, apparently spent most of their time in London where the first seven of their nine children were born - the last two being born in Jersey in 1815 (Mary Jane) and Guernsey in 1822 (Ann Letitia). They then presumably remained at Le Coin until Frederick's death upon which, his eldest son Frederick J. having predeceased him, Le Coin passed to his other son Richard. Richard was an army surgeon who served with the 96th Regiment of Foot and then the 4th (King's Own) Regiment. He spent most of his working life overseas, first in Malta, then at the siege and fall of Sebastopol. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur by the French Emperor for his services in the war against Russia, and then transferred to India. He retired in 1867 and returned to Jersey, presumably to live at Le Coin, which he sold in 1885 to John Alfred Seale, then Constable of St Brelade, for £1,600. Apparently none of Richard's five sons wished to inherit Le Coin. Richard died in Guernsey. I mention all of this on the chance this painting may be appreciated for more than just its decorative value by someone who may have a familial or geographical connection and an interest in bringing it nearer to home. Perhaps even to Le Coin. Ships next business day following payment.
