The American Soldier of the Revolutionary War (ISBN: 0-913150-47-9) Condition: ACCEPTABLE (Visible wear and markings on cover and edges of pages, age is becoming apparent)Synopsis: The Regulations were written based on Baron Von Steuben's knowledge of continental European Armies and his keen observation of the conditions of the American Army then in existence. One of the fundamental differences Von Steuben introduced into the drill was for the American Officers to give the commands directly to the men. In the past they had followed the British, where the British Officers directed their Sergeants to command the men. (The British officer would not lower himself to speak to a common soldier.) This class structure did not set well with the Americans and much better results were obtained using the Von Steuben method of direct commands. These Regulations were to be used by Officers of the Continental Army who had been trained in their use. The terminology used was not designed for the common soldier. In editing this work we have tried to give explanations of the terms and meanings used so that a modern reader will understand and be able to apply them to the recreated camps and battlefields of the Bicentennial. Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (ISBN: 0-8172-5446-3)Condition: LIKE NEWSynopsis: This volume charts warfare from the last quarter of the 18th century until the mid-19th century. The weapons and equipment used by soldiers and sailors developed very little, but the nature of warfare itself underwent a profound transformation. New political ideals, particularly democracy, changed the way that ordinary people viewed wars. They believed that conflict should no longer be conducted by rival kings for their own benefit, but that it was a mean through which citizens could win liberty or protect a state in which they had a stake. The American Revolution was one of the first of such wars, but it was in France, under Napoleon Bonaparte, that this revolutionary zeal was used to build one of the greatest fighting machines the world has ever seen. LIFE World Library: IsraelCondition: GOOD (wear and age are visible, some writing inside cover of book)Synopsis: Israel is a tiny country which has embarked on a great adventure. It is one in which its people feel they cannot fail. With an unshakable belief in its destiny and in the divine meaning of its existence, Israel has astounded the world with its remarkable accomplishments. But the road has been difficult. In one respect, Israel is a paradox. It is known yet unknown. Although thrust into the world spotlight at the hour of its rebirth and prominent in the news ever since, its basic character remains shrouded. The long history of the Jewish people has been familiar for centuries. But just how Israel came into being, what has given it the strength and ability to survive and prosper, and what accounts for its influence the world over are still matters of mystery to many Americans. It is in this respect that Robert St. John and the editors of LIFE have performed a valuable service. In both text and picture essays, modern Israel is here brought into sharp, clear focus. The latent vigor of a people who so long were unable to give full expression tho their mental and physical forces has now found an opportunity for full play. This, at last, is once again their country--their homeland. Human Geography, 3rd Ed.
