PRE-COLUMBIAN JALISCO FIGURE EX: SOTHEBY'S

Description: Seated Male FigureSan Juanito Escobedo, Jalisco, West MexicoProto-Classic Period, 250 B.C.E. - 100 C.E. SEATED MALE JALISCO FIGURE, EX: SOTHEBY’S “San Juanito” Type, Municipio de Juan Escobedo, Jalisco, Mexico Proto-Classic Period, 200 B.C. - A.D. 300 Provenance: Sotheby Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York City, 11/23/1977. For your consideration is this unusual male seated figure who wears only a narrow banded headdress and large and elaborately tasseled ear-ornaments. This enigmatic effigy was modeled sitting erect with elbows on flexed knees, left hand resting on left shoulder. There is a vent-hole atop this fine hollow figure; the neck and lower torso are painted with red slip on a buff ground. Two notable details make this figure particularly fascinating; first, the massive protuberance on the back of his neck and second, the exposed tongue, possible symptoms of Ludwig’s Angina. This museum-quality figure is 8 7/8” (22.3 cm) tall, 5.5” (16 cm) wide, 7” inches (18 cm) front-to-back and weighs a bit over two pounds. Several toes are very slightly chipped, but without repairs, restoration or cracks, this figure is in EXCELLENT CONDITION.Comparables: Gallagher, "Companions of the Dead: Ceramic Tomb Sculpture from Ancient West Mexico," fig. 123; Von Winning “Shaft Tomb Figures of West Mexico,” figs. 116; Proctor Stafford Collection, LA Museum of Art, "Sculpture of Ancient West Mexico," p. 110, fig.71.
