Thank you for your interest. collector description:Militia drum. I bought this drum from Mike Eckard who had bought it from Robert Hardy of Suffolk whom I had dealt with before. I took the drum to school and passed it around my history while I lectured. After a while a young student by the name of Elizabeth Hutchinson raised her hand. I deliberately ignored her as she was a “ding-a-ling” who didn’t care a whit about history and could ask the dumbest questions. Finally I could ignore her no more and I asked what she wanted. She said that she knew when the drum had been made. I knew this to be impossible as I had been over in with a magnifying glass in hopes that it was pre-CW- CW, so I moved on to the next question. She raised her arm again and I tried ignoring her again but to no avail. Again I asked what she wanted and she said that she also knew where the drum was made. Exasperated I asked okay… “when and where?” She replied “1859 in New Jersey.” I was dumbfounded. Elizabeth didn’t even know in which century the CW was fought much less the when and where of the drum. When I asked her how she knew this she held the drum up to the light, peered through the vent hole and said… if you turn your eyes very hard to the right you can see it. Picking up the drum I looked through the hole and to my complete amazement there, in pencil was “1859 NJ.” It was a very humbling experience and taught me a lot about what good teaching was about. As an addendum, in pure coincidence, my daughter came home from school at Meredith College one weekend and asked if I knew an “Elizabeth Hutchinson” and when I replied that I did she said that she roomed across the hall from her and she was studying to … become a history teacher.
