Size of entire piece is approximately 20" x 15" and comes with a title page of similar size. The printed area is approximately 13.25" x 10.25". From the title page:It is a pathetic fact, worth remembering by those who delight in the best work of the 17th century Dutch Artists, that the most eminent of those men suffered the pinch of poverty. Van Goyen, Frrns Hals, Jacob van Rembrandt, all became either bankrupt or very poor. But Rembrandt of Delft, and Rembrandt, had his bright days, when he prosperity smiled on him and Providence seemed kind. These best days were in the years 1632 to 1634. He was the fashionable portrait painter of Holland then. Commissioners poured in upon him then. He received what for the day were good prices for his work. He was admired and held in at least high honour as any other first-rate craftsman, Then it was that be brought beautiful things and made his famous collection of busts, paintings, prints, fine stuffs, rich attire, and even precious jewels and choice examples of goldsmith's work. Then too, he acquired what was better than all these - a sweet, pretty, and loving wife Saskia van Uylenborch. Their married life was short, but entirely happy. Rembrandt was a home loving man. He fulfilled his ideal. From the day of their betrothal he sketched or painted her portrait again and yet again, in all kinds of attire and varieties of pose. The Cassal picture, probably painted in 1633, belongs to the betrothal period. It shows us the little Dutch maiden dressed out in a fine costume of Rembrands's own designing, a costume altogether outside the contemporary fashion. She looks maiden like and proper, as an engaged young lady should, The sprig of rosemary in her hand is the emblem of her betrothal. After the wedding her portraits are far more intimate. Rembrandt shows her at her toilette, decking herself in jewels he lavished upon her; or he shows us himself triumphantly toasting her as she sits upon his knee in sweet content.Saski laughing, Saki dressing, Saski Going out - we behold her in all sorts of situations and on all kinds of occasions, always the same simple, kindly, and essentially good little woman; but none of the portraits is she more attractively revealed than in this, which must be counted amoung the favorite pictures of the majority of lovers of old works of art. Of this picture Dr. Bode justly says that "we can scarcely point to another work over which Rembrandt has lingered so lovingly, in which the arrangement is so refined and the execution so rich and splendid. It is one of the most attractive, not only of his early pictures, but of all his works. Mezzotint Art print shows edge & corner wear with a crease on the lower left corner along with minor spotting and fading on the borders.
