Description: An old tintype by unknown photographer, circa early 1890s. A portrait of two men sitting in a hammock outside, with a horse and buggy visible in background. Tintype photos were not made from negatives, so each one is a one-of-a-kind image; the only way they could be produced in quantity, was by using a special camera that could take multiple photographs at one time, but that was uncommon. The thing that makes tintypes unique is they were produced directly upon the sheet metal, just as daguerreotypes were produced upon silver-plated copper plates, and ambrotypes directly on glass.
