Description: This replacement pin will fit r107 chassis mercedes 380SL 450SL from 1972-1980 which come with the black plastic pin which is stapled into the wood console. Later r107 chassis after 1980 may have an aluminum console pin and my replacement will not work in that situation. Also for 560SL, the pin is different than what I have here. Also, if your shifter surround is black plastic (rather than wood), this might be able to work, but it will need to be glued on, which can be problematic. For those of you who have loose center console wood pieces around your shifter, I have come up with a solution. After coming across numerous broken console pieces which have had their rear retaining pin snapped off by an unknowing owner or mechanic, I have had a proper solution devised to restore these consoles to factory condition. This part has been custom-made and has never been made available from the dealer as a separate replacement part. I have worked with an engineer and improved on the original design so it will be stronger and also the plastic is high temperature and able to withstand the hot summer heat inside a car. I have seen far too many loose center console wood pieces due to having been improperly removed (i.e. yanked up without first pulling backwards). Once the plastic piece in the back of the console snaps off, the console will remain loose. Mercedes does not offer a replacement part, so I got some custom made. No longer will it be necessary to affix a beautiful center console wood piece with an unsightly drywall screw, tape, or any of the other amateur techniques. This black plastic piece is a perfect fit! It has been tested and installed successfully in my customer vehicles and is designed to slide in the slotted pocket on the inside of the center console wood piece. Version 2.0 (shown in the first photo) features a slightly modified pin angle to make installation easier. The original design had a 90 degree angle which works, but the modified pin angle helps aid installation and removal of the wood console. Installation instructions: You (or your mechanic) will simply remove the old plastic piece by carefully removing the old staples which hold the original retaining pin in place. Prior to starting this procedure, I suggest setting the console wood on a soft surface like a towel or piece carpet, so as not to scratch the top surface of your your wood. Removal of the staples is accomplished with a small, sharp flat blade screwdriver or pick which is gently pressed into the wood (on the underside) in order to get the screwdriver (or pick) underneath the staple. Once the screwdriver (or pick) is slightly under the staple, gently pry it up, being mindful of your fingers so you don't slip and accidentily poke yourself. You may have to pry several times on each staple to release it from the wood. Once all staples have been removed, the old, damaged plastic retaining pin can be removed and the new piece installed. It is not required to use any glue. I have designed these so that the clips are a "press fit" so they will fit snugly. However, on certain 560SL center consoles you may need to glue it in, however do so with care as gluing it in will make it much more difficult to remove in the future. If you decide to glue it in, you will do so "at your own risk". If you wanted something non-permanent or easier to remove, you could use something called QuakeHold (available online or at many big box Hardware stores) or a dab of RTV sealant or bathroom caulk rather than JB Weld or wood glue, which would be more permanent. Removal note: If you need to remove your center console in the future, you first will need to follow the proper factory procedure, which is to remove the ashtray, remove the metal ashtray bracket, and then GENTLY wiggle and tilt up the fordward part of the wood shifter surround first and then gently wiggle and slide the center console backwards to allow the pin to clear the insert hole. Failure to do so WILL cause it to snap! Yes, this piece is NOT indestructible or invincible. It is still a small piece of plastic, but is designed to fail first so your wooden shifter surround does not fail. My design is still stronger than the original design, which was a very thin, hollowed out u-shaped piece of plastic. My design is made out of solid plastic. Care must still be exercised, but is not difficult if you use care when removing and installing the panel! If you, your mechanic, or child just yanks up sharply on the back of the panel (which is the incorrect way to remove it), then yes, of course it will have a high probability of breaking. It is designed to be the weak link and will indeed fail before your wood cracks. Caution must not be thrown to the wind and common sense must still be used.
