Consumer warning: We do not know whether this volume is complete. The entire work appears to have contained around 100 plates, but also appears to have been published in four parts. This volume could be a complete part, or it could have had pages removed when it was rebacked. Adam Mansfeldt de Cardonnel-Lawson, in early life Adam Cardonnel (1746/7–1820) was a Scottish antiquarian. Cardonnel was educated for the medical profession, and practised for a while as a surgeon. When the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland was founded in December 1780, he was elected a fellow; he also served as curator from 1782 to 1784. His major work, Picturesque Antiquities of Scotland, was published in four parts between 1788 and 1793. Cardonnel provided both the illustrations and the text, his work having one foot in the Picturesque movement and one in the revival of interest in the Gothic. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
