Description: Miniature vase in the "Deserted Garden" pattern by Pickard, Mark 7, cir 1912 - 1918. The blank mark is mostly obscured by the Pickard gold leaf, but it is Bavarian. Artist signed Nessy (John) cir 1903 - 1922. The vase is slightly fluted at the top, with a top diameter of 2 inches and a base of 1 3/4 inches and a height of 3 3/4 inches. Nessy was born in Prague, Bohemia in 1855, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1895. He began painting for Pickard in 1903 and continued until he moved to the Stouffer Studio in 1922. He He did good commercial designs of fruits, flowers and nuts in mostly naturalistic styles. He also did renderings of "Deserted Gardens" and similar designs, but his "Fruit Panels" were his most outstanding original work. The plate is decorated in the "Deserted Garden" pattern with clusters of purple grapes and red raspberries with green foliage. The background is varying pastel shades of purple, green yellow and brown. Please view all pictures for details. The pictures are made a part of the description. The bio on the artist is from the Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China by Alan B. Reed. Please view my other listings.
