It was established by Somdet Phra Bowonratchachao Maha Sakdiphonsep, Krom Phra Ratchawang Bowon Sathan Mongkhon in the reign of King Rama III. This temple was once the residence of four Thai Supreme Patriarchs and is the location of Mahamakut Buddhist University, the first educational institution for the Thammayut sect of monks in the country, and the temple of King Rama VI and IX. The principal Buddha image in this temple is different from other temples in general because it has two principal Buddha images, and both are important because they are ancient Buddha images: Phra Phuttha Chinnasi, which was brought from the northern chapel of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan in Phitsanulok Province, brought here in its entirety around 2373 BE; and Phra Suwanna Khet, or "Phra To" or Luang Pho Phet, the large principal Buddha image enshrined behind Phra Phuttha Chinnasi, the first principal Buddha image in the ordination hall of this temple. Which Somdet Phra Bowonratchao Maha Sakdipolsep invited from Wat Saratapan, Phetchaburi Province History: Wat Bowonniwet Vihara is a temple that Somdet Phra Bowonratchao Maha Sakdipolsep ordered to be built during the reign of King Nangklao, but before it was completed, he passed away. In 1915, King Rama VI ordered to merge Wat Rangsi Sutthawat into Wat Bowonniwet Vihara.Architecture Wat Bowonniwet Vihara has a Thai-Chinese architecture. Inside the ordination hall, there are 2 important Buddha images as the principal Buddha images: Phra Phuttha Suwanna Khet (Luang Pho To), invited from Wat Saratapan, Phetchaburi Province, and Phra Phuttha Chinnasi, invited from the northern chapel of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan, Phitsanulok Province. Under the base of the Buddha throne, Phra Phuttha Chinnasi, the principal Buddha image in the ordination hall of Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, is where the royal ashes of King Rama VI are enshrined. and His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, both of whom were ordained at this temple. Next to the ordination hall is a large round pagoda built during the reign of King Rama IV, covered with gold tiles. Around the base of the pagoda are Chinese pavilions and Chinese arches. Further away is the Chinese pavilion. In addition, there are murals by Khrua In Khong. Around the pagoda is an important Buddha image, Phra Pairi Pinat. During the time that His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great was ordained and resided at Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, His Majesty ordered a sculptor from the Fine Arts Department to mold a statue and create a Buddha image in the attitude of subduing the ocean. His Majesty traveled to cast the Buddha image on December 5, 1956. His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch Prince Vajirananavarorasa gave the name of this Buddha image as "Phra Phutthanarawantabphitr". Namification of the temple: The correct name for the temple should be Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, which comes from the judgment of His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch. Prince Vajirananavarorasa, while the name Wat Bowonniwet Vihara was used only in documents appointing monks to the ecclesiastical titles. ************************************************************************** May you be lucky, wealthy and safe.
