Description: This is the October 1961 issue of PHOTOPLAY, featuring a photo of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (“America’s Newest Star”) on the cover. There are numerous other articles/features (Elvis, Tuesday Weld, Sandra Dee, Tony Curtis/Janet Leigh, Eddie Fisher/Elizabeth Taylor, Sammy Davis/May Britt, Gardner McKay, James Darren, June Allyson, Lee Patterson, Gary Cooper/Ernest Hemingway, etc.) as well as color and black & white photos and vintage advertisements for then-current movies and products. The magazine contains 100 pages and measures approximately 8.5 x 11 inches. Photoplay was one of the first American film (another name for photoplay) fan magazines. It was founded in 1911 in Chicago, the same year that J. Stuart Blackton founded Motion Picture Story, a magazine also directed at fans. For most of its run, Photoplay was published by Macfadden Publications. In 1921 Photoplay established what is considered the first significant annual movie award. The magazine ceased publication in 1980.
