To my eternal chagrin when I first visited this site the plant was in use but nobody showed it to me and I never thought to ask as I could see modern boilers from the engine house. There were two Lancashire boilers fitted with pulverised coal firing. The picture shows the fan and tubes handling the PF that is injected into the blue windboxes on the furnace fronts. The pulverising mill was behind the photographer. PF is the consistency of flour and potentially explosive. This plant is now flat. This is the stuff that modern coal burning power stations burn at the rate of thousands of tonnes per hour but it is exceptional to see a plant this small.
