Paw Paw Susquehanna and Shenandoah (Asminia triloba) (2 plants)

Description: Paw Paw Susquehanna and Shenandoah (Asminia triloba) (2 plants) The largest of the Native American fruits, the Paw Paw is one of the easiest to grow. The tree size is modest and does well in full to partial sun. Spring brings purple flowers that transform into clusters of oblong fruit. In fall, the large, green fruit softens, emits a ripe fragrance and takes on a yellow color. It’s then you pick and eat the flavorful fruit that’s reminiscent of banana custard. Fruit can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks. The nutritious fruit is high in protein and a good source of vitamins and minerals. You must plant two different cultivars for cross-pollination. We love that Paw Paws are not susceptible to insects or diseases and therefore never need to be sprayed with pesticides. Paw Paws usually start bearing fruit 2-3 years after planting and can yield up to 30 pounds per tree. Paw Paws are sold separately as well as in a Set that includes one plant of each of the following varieties: Susquehanna – one of the renowned Peterson Paw Paws, Susquehanna is large with very few seeds. It has a sweet flavor with a firm, buttery texture. The large fruit ripen in the mid-to-late season to extend your harvest. Shenandoah –one of the renowned Peterson Paw Paws, ‘Shenandoah’ is highly sought after by Paw Paw growers for its delicious fruit that weighs up to one pound each. Ripens in September. Plant will be shipped soil less with roots wrapped in wet media September to April. After it break it's dormancy (April to September) - it will be shipped in pot with soil. Plant is 1 year old. *All orders to California will be shipped bare root in accordance with their state regulations.*Plants will be shipped dormant during the winter months. Small-flowered Pawpaw is a shrub found in SE USA and most areas of NC in dry pine or oak forests or thickets. It generally grows only 6-8 feet tall. The young shoots and leaves are covered with a rusty down, later becoming smooth. The small brownish-purple, six-petaled flowers are borne singly in leaf axils before leaf emergence. The fruit of Dwarf Pawpaw is smaller than other pawpaws but is edible off the tree or used in cooking. More than one genetic strain is needed for best fruit set. Its leaves are the only plant the beautiful zebra swallowtail butterfly caterpillars will eat. Preference is for loose, moist to dry, well-drained soils in partial shade. As it matures and establishes it will tolerate full sun. It does not tolerate dry compacted soils and they have a long taproot so transplanting is difficult. Pawpaws need some babying to establish but are worth the effort. This plant works well as an understory tree in an open woodland setting and provides wildlife with food- and you too if you can get there first.
