Probably best remembered for his Broadway role as stevedore Joe in Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's Show Boat (1928) in whichhe sang "Ol' Man River." Robeson reprised the role in the 1936 film bythe same title. He also reprised his Broadway role as Brutus Jones in the 1933 film ofEugene O'Neill's The Emperor Jones.
