Paolo Bacigalupi. THE WINDUP GIRL. Subterranean, 2011. 1st HC/DJ. Signed Limited

Description: Bacigalupi, Paolo. THE WINDUP GIRL. Burton, MI: Subterranean Press, 2011. 1st edition. With “The Windup Girl Copyright©️2009 by Paolo Bacigalupi” printed on the copyright page along with “Signed, Limited Edition” printed on the copyright page and “Published by arrangement with Night Shade Books” printed on the copyright page, all of which indicate that this is the correct 1st printing of the Subterranean Press edition. This is copy #468/500. This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: There were a number of hardcover printings of THE WINDUP GIRL that were published by Night Shade Books, but there was only one signed, numbered, limited edition that was published by Subterranean Press, which is offered here. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Paolo Bacigalupi was born in 1972 in Paonia, Colorado. Bacigalupi graduated from Oberlin College with a major in East Asian Studies. He is a writer of science fiction and fantasy and is a multiple award-winner and award-nomination honored writer in those genres. He lives in Colorado. In THE WINDUP GIRL, along with a number of his short stories, explore the effects of bioengineering and a world in which fossil fuels are not longer viable. Bioengineering has ravaged the world with food-borne plagues, produced tailored organisms as mimics to both cats and humans, and replaced today’s fossil-fuel reliant engines with muscle power, whether human or engineered animal. Energy storage is accomplished through the use of high-capacity springs, as well as simply transporting food to feed either megodonts (bioengineered elephants) or human laborers. His writing deals with the ethics and possible ramifications of genetic engineering and western dominance, as well as the nature of humanity and a world in which, despite drastic changes, people remain essentially the same. Similar themes run through his books THE WATER KNIFE (2015), where a future American Southwest is reduced to a dystopian Dust Bowl where water is a guarded commodity for the wealthy and powerful interests. Paolo Bacigalupi is the author of such great and famous books as THE WINDUP GIRL (offered here), THE WATER KNIFE, THE TANGLED LANDS (co-written with Tobias Buckell), NAVOLA, the “Ship Breaker” trilogy consisting of SHIP BREAKER, THE DROWNED CITIES, and TOOL OF WAR, THE DOUBT FACTORY, ZOMBIE BASEBALL BEATDOWN, THE ALCHEMIST, and several others. From the dust jacket flap of the Night Shade Books edition: “ . . . Anderson Lake is a company man, AgriGen’s Calorie Man in Thailand. Under cover as a factory manager, Anderson combs Bangkok’s street markets in search of foodstuffs thought to be extinct, hoping to reap the bounty of history’s lost calories. There, he encounters Emiko . . . Emiko is the Windup Girl, a strange and beautiful creature. One of the New People, Emiko is not human; she is an engineered being, creach-grown and programmed to satisfy the decadent whims of a Kyoto businessman, but now abandoned to the streets of Bangkok. Regarded as soulless beings by some, devils by others, New People are slaves, soldiers, and toys of the rich in a chilling near future in which calorie companies rule the world, the oil age has passed, and the side effects of bio-engineered plagues run rampant across the globe . . . What happens when calories become currency? What happens when bio-terrorism becomes a tool for corporate profits, when said bio-terrorism’s genetic drift forces mankind to the cusp of post-human evolution? In THE WINDUP GIRL, award-winning author Paolo Bacigalupi returns to the world of ‘The Calorie Man’ (Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award winner and Hugo Award nominee, 2006) and ‘Yellow Card Man’ (Hugo Award nominee, 2007) in order to address these important questions . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket of the Night Shade Books edition: “ . . . Paolo Bacigalupi’s short stories have appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Asimov’s Science Fiction, and the environmental journal High Country News. His fiction has been nominated for the Nebula and Hugo Awards, and has won the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for best science fiction short story of the year. His non-fiction essays have appeared in Salon.com and High Country News, and have been syndicated in numerous western newspapers including the Idaho Statesman, the Albuquerque Journal, and the Salt Lake Tribune. He lives in Western Colorado with his wife and son, where he is working on his next novel . . . “ From the rear panel of the dust jacket of the Night Shade Books edition: PRAISE FOR PAOLO BACIGALUPI: “The most anticipated science fiction novel of the year. Bacigalupi takes the ideas and themes from his award-winning short fiction and explores them in great complexity and depth than ever before. The results are spectacular. You won’t see the future the same way ever again.” -- C.C. Finlay, author of the “Traitor to the Crown” series. “Paolo Bacigalupi is the best short-fiction writer to emerge in the past decade; he’s the Ted Chiang of the new millennium. He combines beautiful prose, startling imagery, and shocking ideas in unforgettable ways.” -- Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of HOMINIDS. “Paolo Bacigalupi is quite simply one of the best young writers to come down the pike in the last decade. For anyone who hasn’t gotten the news yet, PUMP SIX is a wonderful introduction to a singular and remarkable talent whose work will be around for years to come.” -- Elizabeth Hand, author of GENERATION LOSS and MORTAL LOVE. “Ferocious, intelligent, and precisely rendered, these stories include some of my favorite contes cruels and cautionary tales for the twenty-first century. Paolo Bacigalupi is clearly the fifth rider of the Apocalypse -- you know, the one who writes science fiction in his spare time.” -- Kelly Link, author of MAGIC FOR BEGINNERS and PRETTY MONSTERS. “I hate this guy. All of a sudden he comes out of nowhere, writing like a weird angel, and winning awards, and knocking us old pros out of the box with stories about stuff we hadn’t gotten around to thinking up yet. (Like that stupid bio dog!) Plus he’s young and good looking. Luckily, he has an unpronounceable name.” -- Terry Bisson, author of NUMBERS DON’T LIE and GREETINGS. Clearly Paolo Bacigalupi has become (and remains) one of the best, most important, most famous, and most collectible science fiction authors in the world. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its cream-colored (light tan) full-cloth binding with bright metallic red lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the correct bright red textured endpapers. This may be unread copy of this book. There is no writing in the book (except for Paolo Bacigalupi’s signature on the colophon page); no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue publisher’s price of $75. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. The fantastic dust jacket illustration is by the great science fiction and fantasy artist Vincent Chong. This volume also contains the related (to the “Windup Girl” universe) novellas “The Calorie Man” and “Yellow Card Man.” THE WINDUP GIRL is one of only a handful of novels to have won the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Locus Award. The entire list of awards that THE WINDUP GIRL has won is noted above. It is an amazing and historically very important science fiction novel. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-WINNING SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF PAOLO BACIGALUPI 1st EDITIONS! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they’re worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. I am happy to set up flexible PAYMENT and/or HOLD PLANS for any book(s) that you bid on and win.

Shipping: $4.00 for USPS Media Mail shipping. $10.00 for USPS Priority Mail shipping. Buyers who wish to have packages sent to addresses outside of the U.S. are required to pay for the postage necessary to send such packages. Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I reserve the right to negate a purchase if you are unwilling to pay for the correct shipping charges either to an address in the U.S. or if international shipping is required. I am happy to set up flexible payment and layaway plans if these options make it easier for you to participate in bidding and winning. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won’t guarantee their books, doesn’t have a return policy, or doesn’t correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
